Maturity Gifts (Ephesians 4:11-13)

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)

The Maturity Gifts in Ephesians 4:11-13 represent specific offices Christ gave to the church. These gifts—ministry gifts or offices—are foundational for the Body of Christ's growth, unity, and maturity. While not everyone holds the office associated with each gift, these gifts serve as models to inspire and mature all believers for ministry work. Their ultimate purpose is to equip us to make disciples and build up the church.

The Gifts:

  1. Apostle

  2. Prophet

  3. Evagelist

  4. Pastor

  5. Teacher

Ephesians 4 focuses on unity in the body of Christ and spiritual maturity. Paul begins by urging believers to walk in a manner worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1) and to maintain unity through humility, gentleness, and love (Ephesians 4:2-3). The ministry office gifts equip the church for growth and maturity.

Why these Gifts Matter:

  • Equipping the Saints: These gifts are not about titles or status but about preparing others for ministry and building up the church (Ephesians 4:12).

  • Unity in Diversity: The chapter highlights the diversity of roles within the church, all working together for a common purpose (Ephesians 4:13-16).

  • Maturity in Christ: The ultimate goal of these gifts is to help the church grow in faith and knowledge of Christ, reaching spiritual maturity.

  • Takeaway: Ministry office gifts are leadership roles designed to equip and unify the church, fostering spiritual growth and maturity.

Offices vs. Maturity for All Believers

While not everyone is called to hold the office of Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, or Teacher, the principles and characteristics of these gifts are vital for all believers. Each gift models a specific aspect of ministry that can mature us in our walk with Christ:

  1. Apostolic Vision: Even if we are not apostles, we are called to think beyond ourselves, take initiative, and participate in the mission of advancing God’s kingdom.

  2. Prophetic Alignment: While few hold the office of a prophet, all believers are encouraged to seek and speak God’s truth in love.

  3. Evangelistic Passion: Not all are evangelists, but every believer is called to share the gospel and live as a witness for Christ.

  4. Pastoral Care: While pastors shepherd the church, we are all called to care for one another and build up the Body of Christ.

  5. Teaching Truth: Even if we are not teachers, we are called to grow in understanding God’s Word and share it with others.
